Mammals of the Rainforest
The dense jungle is alive with playful monkeys, such as howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata), white-faced capuchins (Cebus imitator), and spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). You may also spot two-toed sloths (Choloepus hoffmann) and three-toed sloths (Bradypus variegatus) relaxing high up in the canopy. Other mammals to be found up in the trees include Kinkajous (Potos flavus) Northern Silky Anteaters (Cyclopes dorsalis) and different species of squirrels, opossums and bats, which hide under big leaves. Some species spend half of their day in the trees and the other half of it on the ground, such as the Northern Tamandua (Tamandua mexicana), a little ant-eater which can be seen looking for insects, and the rare Tayra (Eira barbara), a small mustelid that hunts for small mammals, lizards and birds.
On the ground the most famous mammal is the elusive jaguar (Panthera onca), which hunts for central american agoutis (Dasyprocta punctata), central american red brockets (Mazama temama), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) or white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari).
The canals and lagoons of the park provide habitat to the rare north american manatee (Trichechus manatus) and to the neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis).
